Getting Started

Hello everyone. I am new to the community and am completely clueless on the topic of hacking and would appreciate if some help would be offered.  :^_^: It would be a dream come true if I could create a super metroid hack that I have been hoping to do for a long time.

First I have the program SMILE and could probably figure out how to use it if I just knew how to start it up. I believe you have to have the original rom of super metroid and would appreciate if someone could provide the link to the correct one, and then how to open it with SMILE. That would be my question for now and other advice would be helpful.
Also if nothing else, I would at least like to know how to access and play the other hacks there are in the community because I am lacking whatever it is I need to open it with.

We can't link you to the proper rom, you have to find it yourself. the US/JP roms are the same iirc and are what is used.

As for playing other hacks, you need a patcher tool for .ips files.
personally, what i use for that is lunar ips, which you can get here

Hey, bro. Welcome to the site man. The ROM you are looking for will be labeled "Super Metroid [JU] [!].smc". Look that up in Google and you will find it. MAKE SURE YOU OWN THE GAME CARTRIDGE OR NINTENDO WILL SUE YOU.

How terrifying.

I would recommend using SMILE 2.5, if you aren't already, for two reasons:
1. It is what this guide was written for and seems to have helped quite a bit of people in the past.
2. SMILE RF is a tad bugged right now, as you apparently can't set/reset the quickmet/saves folder as of the recent update.

Repeating other's info, thedopefish has provided a great link for learning how to play hacks and the filename Tarince mentioned is correct as well.

While working on a hack, make sure to make plenty of backups for when things break, don't be afraid to break things (it's how you're likely to best learn how the ROM works), use Room of the Month and the screenshots thread for community feedback on your level design/rooms, don't be discouraged if everything you want isn't as easy as it seems, and best of luck on starting and keeping to your envisioned project. A lot of people fall short on that last one.
