AND THE HACK IS BACK IN ACTION! I should be able to work on this much more often than I originally was.

So, yeah, my new hack in progress, not much has been completed yet (if anyone realizes, this is Metroid: Mission Alpha Tower, I shortened the name) But, I will be able to provide screenshots of 1 or 2 screens in a bit, I don't have much completed yet.
(Note: Takes place after Super Metroid, but before Other M or Fusion) Samus is notified of a new space station the Galactic Federation created to keep an eye on the remains of Planet Zebes, but then gets a distress signal from said space station. She goes to investigate what happened......
Something that's only 5% done is assumed to never get finished!

Prove me wrong.

Heeeeeeeeyyyyy I swear this will be completed, and I kinda need feedback on the poll tbh, as its still got alot to do, but I am planning on releasing this, I will as soon as Brinstar is at least partially complete I will release a demo every now and then to show that this hack is not dead

I think it looks good, except for the lone block of lava at the bottom-left. It is out of place, and it looks really cut-off. I will say one thing, giving a power-up at the beginning makes it not really that special, and the player doesn't get to appreciate how much easier the game is with that item.

I think it would be interesting to start with the long beam, and perhaps make the Long Beam into the Wall Jump, considering this game would be a tower. I think Editroid is capable of doing something like that, but you might have to ask Snarfblam about that.

Also, are you planning on using his cool "Metroid + Saving" patch? I feel that patch should be part of every Metroid hack, and the 4.0 version has a minimap in the corner that you can edit using another program of his, as well as the Wall Jump. Just suggesting some stuff, I like seeing people make hacks, there will never be a shortage of Metroid games :^_^:

Hmm, maybe I will have to get a-hold of him about that, that could be very helpful! Also, for me, not having the long beam from the start has always been a pet peeve of mine with the original Metroid and Zero Mission, so, hence why I am including that, although, about the Wall Jump, if that is a part of the hack, it will be an optional patch most likely, with a little difference in the map layout, to allow that to be functional, but, thanks for the idea mate! So, yeah, hopefully I will have a demo out soon of at least a portion of Brinstar.
And I also hope to do something with this hack that makes it stand out, you guys will see what I mean later on.....(Hint, a way to get around easier...)
Also, I know if this might be a bit of a stretch, but, PK, could you maybe when you are complete with the Mega Man X sprites create new NES Metroid Sprites, to give the hack more of a space station feel? As always, I would give you full credit for the sprites!

Also, I put in my own vote to the voting poll, just to prove what I kinda like as an Idea there, but its up to whatever gets the most votes by a week or 2.

PKstarship

I will try my best, I just got into pixel art a couple of weeks ago. I'll play a ton of Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission (both have space station elements to them) and try to make some stuff for you. I'll give a decent amount of tiles, I would guess you want the areas to look like different parts of a space station  :^_^: I might pitch a special tileset for Samus, just to add a little extra.

Also, I'm so insane that I've literally played through the entirety of Zero Mission without the Long Beam or Wave Beam via sequence-breaking, really saves time during a speed-run.

Lastly, will you be using Editroid's capability for animaited tiles? I might be able to make some animated tiles for lava, rinka dispensers, and such, which would probably make this hack look really good.

Meeptroid

I will most likely as of now not be doing animated tiles, I would just like a new space station-esque tile set. Here's how I would like it to be. I would like Brinstar to almost look like a Station hub gone wrong, Norfair look all kinda melted, and of course artificial bubbles! Kraid's Lair to look like an observatory for animals, Ridley to look like something HORRIBLY WENT WRONG THERE, and Tourian, well, let me PM you the Tourian part.....

PKstarship

I was thinking, is it possible to have background tiles? I was thinking about making windows in Kraid's lair to make it look like a zoo, similar to the area in Metroid Fusion, but some of the windows are broken, to indicate that some of the harmful animals (perhaps Metroids) escaped. Are backgrounds possible, or will they appear in front of Samus?

PK, I don't believe it is possible, sadly. At least to my knowledge it isn't possible, or if it is, I have never seen it before... Sorry PK

PKstarship

Perhaps some foreground elements then, like pipes, grass in the Kraid area, possibly big tall bushes to hinder your sight a bit? Metroid had some foreground elements, but not very much, and a lot of rooms were under-detailed and flat, with mainly enemies to decorate the rooms.

Oh yes! That would be brilliant, although, you are working within sprite work that I can actually put into my hack, correct?

PKstarship

I will try, I'm mainly in the concept phase right now, pitching ideas and stuff, seeing which ideas you like. All of the things I described can be made to only use one color, the grass and bushes can use green, and the pipes can use a shade of gray or white. I hope to have maximum detail while keeping within the palette limitations :^_^:

OK, we will see if it will work then! Well then, I'm off for the night, cya tomorrow all :rfk: also, as a link to yo all as somethin to keep ya busy and to laugh ur butts off while waiting for me to complete anything

Anyways, Meeptroid out!

PKstarship

I was thinking about Kraid's Lair right now, this is the one I have a lot of ideas for right now. How would it sound if some of the vertical rooms were in trees, where the platforms are indicated by lighter patches of leaves? One of my favorite rooms in Metroid Prime has an enormous tree in the middle of it, you have to climb it to get to the top, That room gave me this idea.

Also, I was wondering, since this is a tower, will vertical doors be in the hack, or is that a bit too complicated?

Meeptroid

Hmm, interesting, I might have to give that a shot! And no to vertical doors, that would be too much of a pain, and considering I know no coding, just, no

Meeptroid

Also, the poll is getting quite competent, I am interested on what goes to be the top! As that will be the order the game will happen....

PonchGaming

Aw man, no vertical doors. Well, still looking forward to it. Do you have a story yet, or is it just the original story but with a different map?

Meeptroid

I am hoping to be able to create a new story, although, considering the size of it, I will sadly not be able to implement it in-game, but yes, I am planning on creating a new and hopefully a diverse story, I might just have to start on it now that you commented on that....

Meeptroid

Ugh, the more I think about this, the more I keep realizing this hack might be better for Super Metroid, can anyone give me opinions?

Sure: Please take five minutes to plan what you want to achieve before you start a project, so that you don't announce / drop them every two days.

Meeptroid

I understand, this just kinda hit my brain a lot later, so, the more I think about it, the more I realize maybe it would be better for Super Metroid, the project wouldn't be getting canceled, just simply moved to a different game.

PKstarship

I'm not really sure... Super Metroid is more advanced with extra items, but I'm not quite sure it would fit the vibe of the hack. Also, I am not yet good enough at pixel art to make a whole tileset for Super Metroid. I just think that the Metroid+Saving patch should be added if you're hacking NEStroid, I don't like passwords that much in Metroid hacks.

No no no, that wasn't the reason. The reason I saw was all the areas might be better and having wall jumping from the start, and there are a lot of other reasons I believe that Super would be better, and PK, we won't need a tile set right away, but from here on out, I am gonna lock this thread and explain whats happening, if you need to talk to me about something, PM me PK!

We won't need a tile set right away.

I think you're setting yourself up for one of two outcomes:

A: A lot of rework

Or

B: A terrible tile set because it's designed to avoid rework.

The alternative would be to use the vanilla tiles and just add some new elements to it to spice it up a bit.  That approach might minimize rework but you're going to have it one way or another.  My advice is make your tiles first, then design and construct your areas.  If you don't think you're ready to make a tile set then play around with graphics creation for a while until you feel confident.

BTW, there's no reason to go around locking all of the threads you've created, even if you're done with the thread yourself. Thread locking should be rarely used.  I've been posting here since around 2011 or so and have never had a reason to lock a thread.  Just something to consider (not abusing the locking ability).

Edit: BTW, I was going to comment (with some advice) on your Mission Zero thread since I downloaded it and checked it out but you locked that one too.  :eyeroll:

Meeptroid

There ya go, I fixed that one!
