So many planets gone to waste...

Think of all the times when you play a Super Metroid hack and by the time the hack concludes, the world you spent XX:XX exploring explodes in an epic blaze of glory because of some random time bomb.

Am I the only one here who's gotten sick of it?

Say you wanted to make a ROM-Hack where your goal is to "save the world from the evil space pirates" or something like that... The planet exploding at the end could only make for a downer ending (which I personally hate) or it would just come off as dumb. Has anyone ever taken the challenge to edit Super Metroid's ending to something else? And if so, what was the change?

Feel free to leave your two cents.

Lunaria

There was that one time where I removed the ship from the sequence, implying that samus died in the explosion.

MetroidPeter

I meant something more drastic than that, like instead of the planet exploding while Samus flies off, she does that but without the explosion.

Also, that's a MASSIVE downer ending right there.

Quietus

I'd imagine that it'd get done before too long. I know that people wanted to edit the intro for an age, then it happened with Hyper (maybe earlier, but not that I've seen), so the ending may well be next. :^_^:

MetroidPeter

Hyper didn't really edit the intro much, it's still "ominous shot of Ceres and Baby Metroid." How about something like this: a reverse effect of what you see at the end with the ship taking off, where it would zoom into the planet from the sky, as if to simulate a meteor falling towards it. And right before it hits the ground, it would cut to black, and then you'd see the title screen.

I know that probably sounds like much and will likely take some code wizardry, but I have a feeling it's possible.

Quietus

I wasn't saying that Hyper's intro was a world-shatteringly new story, just that, since it hadn't been done before, it was a technical achievement, and another step toward there not being much left beyond our grasp. It would therefore stand to reason that expanded stories, intros, and endings would follow suit. Also, I believe Phazon completely changed the intro screen, if that's what you're referring to.

It wasn't much more than extracting and editing two tilemaps - Metroid being handed over, and room full of scientists plus Metroid tube. The actual editing of those tilemaps was an artistic feat, though!

I've always thought Zebes was a den of Evil, so I never felt bad about blowing it up, except for when I didn't help the little animals escape. Otherwise its kinda like the first Death Star -the one without any independent contractors aboard, just working to scrape a living- which deserved to be destroyed. But with all of the Chozo Ruins and Artifacts that get obliterated; it's an archaeologist's worst nightmare. Plus, biodiversity'd be at an all-time low. It's like nuking a Rainforest; one with ancient civilizations and stuff. So i guess the OP has a point.

Anyways, OP gave me a flashback to playing Fortuna as a kid, from star fox 64.

so many quotes from this game...
I think it would be really cool to apply this to a hack. Not necessarily the Bomb-Diffusal, but the concept of a permanent and major branch of the plot, a diverging event system combining Super metroid's Explorative-expansion one with the diverging-then-converging one from star fox 64.

MetroidPeter

Well who says that the Metroid Rom hack has to take place on Zebes? It could take place anywhere really, Tallon IV, SR-388, Earth, Garg, you name it. Also, that's an interesting idea, diverging and re-converging plot events... Maybe something like this example: you can get either the Speed Booster or Power Bombs at a time, and getting one blocks the other off until later.

Quietus

That has already been done. Off the top of my head, it was choosing either Supers or Power Bombs, but I forget which hack did it first.

FPzero

Limit is the hack you're thinking of.  Which is amazing, because Limit was something like the 2nd full hack ever made.  We're talking ~2006 here.  I don't think I've ever seen anyone do something like that to the extent Limit did ever again.

OP? No idea what that means. Anyway, so has anyone done a significant to the mode 7 heavy ending to Super Metroid? Or is this going to be a dead topic until someone does?

'OP' refers to one of two related things:
1, The Original Poster, as in the person creating the topic / thread.
2, The Original Post, as in the first message posted in a topic / thread.

As long as your not into the whole brevity thing, ya might enjoy Metroid II, if you haven't already. It's got an ending that fits the description.
spoiler alert
MetroidPeter

Lol "spoiler alert" Super Metroid spoils Metroid II so hard that most people don't even play it. (Which is a shame too because I liked Metroid II...) Anyway, yeah I know, at least it fits the description until Metroid Fusion.

Oh uh... Spoilers.

I just want the ending to be something other than a Zebes shattering kaboom considering that if a hack takes place on Earth, then the original ending could only spell disaster.

Also, "brevity" what's that?

its kinda like the noun form of 'brief' (brief:brevity::sensitive:sensitivity): M2 took me a really long time the first time I played it. made the ending more enjoyable tho, i have glorious memories of walkin on the surface with the music and the stars as a kid.
