Assembly hacking Macross Scrambled Valkyrie - simple control change?

Is there anyone available who is skilled at assembly hacking who is also willing to help me with a project for Super Dimension Fortress: Macross Scmabled Valkyrie?

I would like to switch the controls for the mech-transformations from a single button to the L and R buttons in Macross Scrambled Valkyrie (SFC). The point would be to allow the player to cycle backwards a transformation. I think this would really go a long way to making the game even more fun than it already is, speeding up gameplay so if you accidentally morph passed the one you want you can just go back one, instead of forward multiple times.

Maybe this simply can't be done?
