WELCOME, to the very first MetroidConstruction competition!

And with Christmas coming up very soon, the competitions theme is...CHRISTMAS

So, the rules are very simple

1) Its a mini hack, so minimum of 5 rooms and a max of 10 rooms.
2) Gotta be Christmas themed, so make sure we see a few Christmas tree's or something. (not essential, can just give a cold palette hack)
3) Must be headerless, HEADERS ARE EVIL
4) Must be able to complete the game, so for Super Metroid use DE4D, the correct layer1_2 or something, if you get stuck here, ask in the correct thread.
5) Get them in on time, you got till 00:00AM Christmas day SERVER time, you miss it you wont be entered

Can be a hack of ANY Metroid game, but its got to be finishable, and within them rules, SM is best but good luck if you hack with something else.

You cant email them in just yet, we are setting up an email system for it, once its done ill put it here.
Edit: Got the EMail system up, send em in to entries@metroidconstruction.com
DO NOT ATTACH THEM TO THE POSTS THANK YOU, and do not email us ROMs.

The prizes include an award symbol under your avatar with a description when you hover it, as well as a larger one that goes into your viewable profile!

so with that get cracking.

See this post

Jathys

Damn it... Just coming across this now and I never have time to do anything. Still though, I have an idea of "what I would do if I were to do it". Two bosses, 6-7 rooms. Based not so much on awe-inspiringness, but hilarity. Could probably do the whole thing in a single sitting too, assuming I stick with my kindergarten drawing capabilities.

GF_Kennon

Bumping so that people know the email system has now been set up, its entries@metroidconstruction.com

Remember these have to be in before 00:00am Christmas day, SERVER TIME.

Phazar

I'm afraid there won't be any entries from me this year, since there isn't enough time to make a decent hack for the holidays.

Well... This topic was started 12/11/09, just so you know...
In order of playthrough

Christmas Mini by GF_Kennon
-a little disapointed I couldn't change my control scheme, this really wasn't a problem until I got to Kraid though, which btw would have been better with darkening palettes. :D
-overall, it was ok. Didn't seem very "Christmasy" to me though. Though the gfx are awesome. :D
-end time: 7:01
-rank: 3/5

Christmas Minihack by Sadiztyk Fish
-Christmas music was upbeat and a refreshing twist for Metroid
-A new mission goal is always fun and exciting, and I think "collect the hats" worked well for this hack. They were hidden well, and I had fun trying to find them all.
-the ending got me, I gotta say that much :P
-end time: 12:57
-rank 1/5

Wet Winter 0.9 by Crys
-Starting in Ceres actually put over the 10 room limit ;D, but we will probably overlook that.  Also, it ruined the imersion...
-Played in the usual boss rush minnihack fashion, but with new gfx. Not alot of vareity with the gfx either.  The kirbys everywhere were pretty awesome though! :3
end time: 00:15
-rank: 4/5

Super Xmas 'Triod by Person701
-Same as with Green-Kirby's hack, starting in Ceres kills it...
-Not being finished means I don't know how far I can go.... I really don't want to play it if I don't know how far it goes.
end time: n/a
rank: 5/5

INERTIA by squishy_ichigo
-my own hack! :D So, I'm gonna complain about some of the stuff I wished I could have done but wasn't able to.
-Scrolling sky in the first room was glitching, so it ruins the imersion. Also, the scrolling messes up alittle bit between some rooms for a few frames.
-I wanted to edit the ending text to better go with how the game plays. Such as (WAIT A SEC... DID SAMUS JUST DIE? TIME COMPLETED: xx:xx)
end time: 1:41
rank: 2/5 (not trying to be selfish... but come on :P)
This is my official vote ok kiddies?
That means Sadi wins my vote. :D
SadFish gets my vote. It's has the most Christmas spirit involving Santa, the North Pole, and custom music. The search for the hats was fun too. ^_^

Sorry Kennon, but the moment I couldn't custom my controls I felt immediately turned away. =\

GK: Not to bad. The GFX were a nice addition but going though Ceres took away from the experince some.

And squishy, it was fun and colorful (I was going to rip those GFX), but I agree with Kennon's friend: physics aren't my favorite.

And my hack is apparently fraked up in so many different ways I don't know wtf went wrong. o.o
Final vote: SadFish.

Silver Skree

Alright, I finished playing them all, and it's time for a little evaluation. I have 3 hacks in particular that I mainly want to touch on.

First of all, there's Kennon's hack. This one was really neat, and was, of course, graced by Kennon's kickass graphic skills. Sadly, though, it didn't do a whole lot... I would have loved to see more done with it.

Secondly, there's Sadi's hack. This one was, by far, the most impressive and amusing. I loved all the custom text, and laughed a lot. Some of the hats were a pain to get, and I had to remaster the IBJ to get one in particular, but aside from that, it was great.

Lastly, there's GK/Crys' hack. This one, for me, was the most fun all around to play. The graphics were simple but pleasing, the slight change in water physics were nice, and the item order was fun. Torizos and Ridley were a blast to fight, and the hack didn't outstay its welcome.

So, my votes are as such:

1st) Crys' Wet Winter.
2nd) Sadi's Christmas minihack.
3rd) Kennon's Christmas hack.

The rest of you did really good, and I wish you all a Merry Christmas!

EDIT: WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD, play the hacks first.
1. Sadiztyk Fish -This is the clear cut winner in my opinion. The fact that you made something that impressive on such a tight time-frame is pretty unbelievable. This is not only a great Christmas hack, it's a great hack in general.

2. Crys - I liked the tileset, but it was pretty repetitive. You'd enter a different area and it seemed like only the colors would change. Wasn't really very fun fighting those bosses that early either.

3. Squishy - First off the tileset is magnificent, just like I expected from you. However I disliked the physics a great deal. Normally I can tolerate them, but it just wasnt fun here.

4. GF Kennon - If this was strictly a Graphics competition then you might've won, but it's not. Honestly the gameplay and level layout was nothing special. Those random reflectors in that one room appear to make no sense. I usually use them to reflect shots at gates. And on top of that I couldnt get the Torizo to activate. I have no clue why. I would just get stuck in that room. I opened it up in smile and beat it though.

5. Person - I liked it, but the fact that it's unfinished bothers me, I actually just quit once I read that. Also it wasnt nothing compared to the fully customized tilesets others had. Go ahead and finish it, and I'll play it all the way through. Also I got permistuck inbetween some slopes with the morphball. I should've screenshot it so you could fix it, but didnt think about it.
Lunaria

So I played them all...
Super Xmas 'Triod by Person701
Well, I like the palette, but... yeah...
I guess the level design was kinda cool but it lacked bug fix. I found quite a few rooms where I got stuck. One room dumped me into a room with garbage tiles, black BG and a none working elevator, I guess that's the end.

Christmas Minihack by Sadiztyk Fish
This hack just screams "FUCK YEAH, I'M AWESOME!"
First of all, the music is just plain awesome that you got it in there. The gameplay is great too for the most parts. Some jumps where tricky to learn how to do, but beside those it's just plain fun! I can't wait to see a full hack from you with this type of gameplay!
As far as visuals go, it's great! Everything just adds up to an overall great looking hack, and that's how it should be!
Need less to say, I think this is the best one!

INERTIA by squishy_ichigo
Gameplay is the main thing here. I like how it tries to do something new and all. But it was just not very fun to play.
It's like grand prix 1/2 mixed with a bad sonic game. You need to go fast to make the jumps, yet you don't have the reaction time to do the jumps. And it also runs on 3 layers like sonic games, above one is the fastest, mess up once and you go down, mess up again you fall down another step. If you fail again you land in water and have to backtrack a long way to get back on track.
You're however very limited to what you can do in morphball though. You got a endless supply of powerbombs, not that it really helps when each enemy takes 2-3 to kill. In order to drop enough to kill the enemies you have to stop. But as you can not die I guess it's not a problem to run into them and just keep going anyway. >_>
As far as graphics go, it's good. Some enemies look weird though, but beside that it's great.

ChristmasMetroid by GF_Kennon
Um, yeah. This hack looks great and is very fun to play until you get to kraid. The lack of damage gradation really hurts it.
Also, supply station looks glitchy if you go back after kraid! :<

Wet Winter 0.9 by Crys
OMG WTF I REMOVED THE FREAKING INTRO WHY IS IT STILL THERE ASTASTSATASTASTASTASTASTASTASTASTASTAS
RealRed

Persons hack: Broke as a joke. Seems like this would really be a sweet hack if you spent a bit more time knocking out bugs. You didn't even give yourself enough time to properly name your hack.
<Zhs25th> Did you name it "Triod" on purpose
<person701|Temporus> yes
<person701|Temporus> onwait
<person701|Temporus> no
<Zhs25th> xD

squishy_ichigo's hack: nice graphics, awesome morphball use concept, but this really lacks any real gameplay. This is just bounce around from platform to platform. if you fall down, you bounce from platform to platform elsewhere. The enemies are nearly pointless to fight, and some of the jumps are a real pain to pull off. The gameplay used here could make a really outstanding hack with some changes, but this is really just dull.

Green-Kirby's hack: 5 supers and no beams to fight ridley hahaha bye. The graphics are quite nice, and the gameplay was quite fun, but I just couldn't go on with the equipment I managed to collect before I found ridley. Maybe I missed something, maybe I didn't, but this part really killed it for me.

Sadistyk-Fish's hack: New music check, new way of beating the game check, nice aesthetics check. A perfect hack, no? No. Despite the fact that this hack goes above and beyond all the other hacks, It has its points that really bring it down. The music! Perfect match with the christmas theme!... for a few minutes. The charm of the new music only lasts so long before becoming an annoyance. Also, some of the hats were a pain to get.
One last thing I want to say: When I first read what the ectoon, or, elf had to say, I shortly afterwards ran into him, getting killed instantly. I lol'd hard at this.

GF_Kennon's hack: Loaded with new graphics, and has some rather fun fights (like the invasion of BANGs), But sort of missed the christmas theme. Yes, it did have "snowy" looking rooms and a nice cozy house, but what about the rest of them?
2) Gotta be Christmas themed, so make sure we see a few Christmas tree's or something. (not essential, can just give a cold palette hack)
Your hack really didn't even hit the dartboard for this one right here. This is a sweet hack, but really isn't christmas-y at all.

So, who's was my favorite?
NONE OF THEM, BETTER LUCK NEXT YEAR, LOSERS
I'm joking, today was FullOfAwesome. We've all got our flaws, which is why the critiques really help - This is how we can improve! I wouldn't choose a favorite, because they're all awesome in their own way. I'll be looking forward to the successful entries next year, hopefully from a larger portion of the community! This contest was not only a way to compete, but also, in a way, to give each other a gift: something to play made from their own hard work. Congratulations to you five winners this year, and merry christmas to all of metconst~!
Sadfish hands down. Had the most fun with Squishies hack though. Tried going for speed and score.

http://digital-mantra.com/intertia.wmv
me playing inertia for score and time. added my own brand of retarded keyboarding to set the mood.

squishy_ichigo
In my defense, the game was not designed to be played once.  It was designed to be played multiple times, to find each path, see which one was fastest, explore to find the hidden score boosting presents and obtain high score.

The enemies are there a slight distraction, and for the scoring system.  Your goal is to either maneuver around them with finesse, or kill them quickly for points.  They also serve as decoration.

There is a total of 14 possible combinations, and I was hoping people would look past how "dull" it seems, and look at how much fun it could be.

Oh well... better luck next time... :(

Points go to DMan for getting the point of the hack. Good Job!  :hfive:

If you liked it, thats great, if you didn't like it, thats cool too! I try to give you kiddies a different game each time, sometimes it doesn't hit home, but that makes me try harder for the next one.  Thanks for playing, and see you kiddies next time! :awesome:

Super Xmas 'Triod by Person701
Too broke to play.    What I did see wasn't too bad though.

Christmas Minihack by Sadiztyk Fish
I would like this one the best if it weren't for the lack of customizable controls.  Since I'm not used to the "factory settings" it made it incredibly difficult to play and I couldn't get that damn IBJ to work right.  Aside from that...  I love the music change!  It fit very nicely with the theme, right along with the hat collecting.

INERTIA by squishy_ichigo
Nifty graphics and fun game play.  Replay value on this is very high.

ChristmasMetroid by GF_Kennon
Not very Christmas-y, but not all that bad either (once I figured out why Samus would insta-death every time the game loaded  LOL).  As with SadFish's, the lack of customizable controls is a big turn off.    However the graphics were quite tasty and it was pretty fun, even with screwed controls (made Kraid into quite the challenge).

Wet Winter 0.9 by Crys
Fighting Ridley right after Torizo?  WTF!?  It was pretty awesome up until then, but holy crap, unless I missed a bunch of powerups then I was way underpowered to take Ridley down.
Wait...  Hidden kirby villages?  Ok, I definitely missed something then...  *goes off to replay and search for hidden stuffs*  Ok, so Ridley isn't nearly as difficult after you get the pretty pink lazer.  XD

And the line-up is?

1st - Tie between Squishey and SadFish (better controls would have pushed SadFish's to the front)
2nd - Crys' Wet Winter
3rd - ChristmasMetroid by GF_Kennon
and in an unplayable 4th - Super Xmas 'Triod by Person701

All in all though, great hacks folks.  Was fun (for the most part) to play em.
Zhs2

Okay, I took the chance to play through each of the hacks presented today for the Christmas Compo. It was the only SM hacks I'd played in a while... ¯\o_O/¯
1. Christma'troid - GF_Kennon - 9/10

This is the one that gets my vote for winner. It wasn't the most creative. It wasn't the best in terms of graphically sufficient (there were plenty of awesome Easter eggs, though, for the informed viewer.) It didn't have a way for the player to customize his/her controls, as much of a non-annoyance that was to me. It wasn't even very Christmassy, which is what he who created the contest essentially asked for.

2) Gotta be Christmas themed, so make sure we see a few Christmas tree's or something. (not essential, can just give a cold palette hack)
Yes, he bullshitted on that one, didn't he? I'll admit he loses a few points in that regard.

What does matter, though, was that it was fun, and it was short and to the point (in most cases, it was pretty linear, which might hurt for a fullhack; however, for something this short, it didn't matter that much. I do wish he could have put some secret areas in, though.)

Fight through a room. Stop, take a breather. Oh god, BANG RAPE. Whoops, that was close. Couple of easy Space Pirates OH NO TORIZO. And the list doesn't stop there. It felt almost like a real arena slog, as opposed to those cheap little boss rushes which basically pit you against the cheap cheapy cheapness of Super Metroid's bosses with lesser equipment (The creator of those should know exactly what I'm talking about.)

I supposed I'm just a tiny bit biased, but in any case, this hack was fun, graphically adequate, and I loved it all the way to the end. Kudos to that credits page, by the way. Bloodsonic never caught it when he first played through it. :^_^: If I'd played Grand Prix I suppose I'd had more to complain about, but I don't so pyeh! :heheh: 9/10 for this excellency.

tl;dr, Bloodsonic described this hack for me:
Quote from: IRC21:35 <Bloodsonic> james' was like classic styled run & gun badassery

2. Santa's Quest - Sadiztyk Fish - 8.5/10

A close contender to that of ChristmasMetroid, but I'm giving it second vote just because I'm an unloving betch and believe that ChristmasMetroid should get first. =P

*Ahem.* Anyway, the review. When you start up the hack, you are immediately greeted by three things:
1. A breathtaking landscape constructed from Yoshi's Island tilery.
2. An informative signpost (that doesn't really look like a signpost) that informs you of your mission: collecting eight hats of the Kris Kringle influence.
3. The rather annoyingly chirpy music that sounds like it was taken straight from a rather hideous MIDI. Of course, that's not to say it doesn't help spread the holiday cheer. :eyeroll:

All complaining about the music aside, the gameplay is simple: Use your movement skills to collect all eight hats, picking up the almighty Running Boots (What, you couldn't run in that heavy-ass suit only moments before?) and the Morph Ball Bombs (which, contrary to its named description, also gives you Morph Ball as a package deal. Stunning!) There's a few difficult hats to reach, and a few challenges as well, but overall it's a very fun and laid-back hack that's easy to enjoy. Too bad the bomb counter was fudged and the music was so ear-tingling. 8.5/10 for the ASM wonderland.

3. Snowy Waters - Crys - 8/10

Another one with that classic Super Metroid item hunt feel, only shortened to about 10 rooms or so. It's a pretty cool feel along with that diggin' icy tileset that seems to span the entire hack and then some, in at least two color schemes! :awesome:

The enemies you find are tough and the upgrades are even tougher. There are secret areas abound, but only a few host items for you to collect. (I found 4 hidden areas with Kirby villages, if you can call them Kirbies. =P) Watch your energy, and pull back when you're wounded. That is the Green Kirby way.

Overall, it wasn't a bad play. I had fun searching out the hidden villages (which were not all hidden by bomb blocks - thank god,) but the Ridley fight was such a turn-off that I had to detract a few points. Makes me almost wish I'd played Wet Dream now... 8/10 for this Green Kirby masterpiece.

(P.S. In addition to hidden Kirby villages, which I'm not even sure how many there are of, Crys also tells me that there is a secret beam somewhere in the hack. Get it while it's hoooooot)

4. Newton's Favourite Hack (Or Not) - squishy_ichigo - 7/10

This one tried to be creative and new. Too bad it didn't make too good of an attempt to be more fun. ;(

The hack is mainly an attempt at a minigame played entirely in the Morph Ball position. You're supplied only with Sam's Custom Infinite Explode Nukes, which are a screen-wide attack that does enough damage to matter, and a retro-fitted Ball Jump Boost system, which happily provides you with a boost of speed as long as you're propelling yourself through the air. The object is to make it through the obstacle (read: enemy) filled courses and make it to the end while collecting as many score points as possible from each of your defeated enemies.

It sounds like fun, but I suppose that's if you're going for a self-imposed goal while playing the thing. As far as rushing through the hack goes, most sections are extremely mundane, letting you raft through waters, platform across the deeps, and fly across Christmacoloured majestic towers in the search for more points. Yes, more points. That's all you're really after, right? I suppose if there was an imposed timelimit it would have felt more like an actual challenge, but the laid-back feel of it all kind of dropped it in my point of view. Hey, at least I had a bit of enjoyment strafe-powerbombing Sidehoppers. 7/10 for the hack with actual replay value.

5. What Is Triod I Don't Even - person701 - 5/10

I loaded up this hack, and played through the Ceres intro. I sped the game up because I couldn't be bothered to parley with the space dragon Ridley, who promptly swiped my health down to 29 and sped off with Baby Metroid in tow. Speeding up the game again, I ran back through the station and escaped to my ship, which immediately set a course to Zebes. Ridley was going to pay (for what, I don't know. It sounds like a good sentence in this story, so shaddup.)

My ship landed in a canyon of the frosty blue exterior of Zebes, known only as Crateria. I promptly exited my ship and saw Morph Ball leagues above my position. With relative ease, I wallkicked up to the treasure and collected my bounty, heading off of the platform and to the right of my ship. Running through a narrow corridor and jumping the first gap I came across (it seemed imperative that I do so, although I had no idea why at the time,) I decided to drop down the second one in search of more pathways into the heart of Zebes. I found a rock in my path at the very bottom of the shaft, and as I attempted to roll underneath, lo and behold, I got stuck! It seemed that a bizarre force of video game logic had swallowed me up, and had me trapped for all eternity until I starved to death... or worse. Even in my panicked state of captivity, I had remembered one thing: I had remembered to activate the emergency load station before I embarked from my ship (an action I habituated upon at the start of each mission,) thus allowing me to recover from the most painful of encounters should I be extinguished in battle. I immediately activated the load sequence and found myself in...

Darkness. I was engulfed in everlasting darkness, never to find light once more again. Or was I? I quickly activated an emergency lighting system, scouring through the layer of pure black to shed some sort of clue on my current location. It looked like reddish platforms covered with red and green lights... I repeatedly pressed the load sequence button, but by bizarre twist of fate, it seemed I was destined to be trapped in the recesses of darkness, surrounded by neverending platforms adorned with lights... Quickly shaking all irrational thought from my head, I immediately pressed the self-destruct button, thus ending it all. May there be no more of the horror of the trap of Samus Aran, for Samus Aran is no more.

-- End Log, December 26th, 2009, 12:20 AM.

I suppose I would have played more if that hadn't happened, but it made me pretty angry. 5/10 for the hack, and 10/10 for my narrative, which actually wins my vote for this year's Christmas Competition. =D
All in all, a good round of hacks this year. Congratulations to you all for participating and creating what you did. It was a fun afternoon for me! Merry Christmas to you all.

devonodev

Yay for christmas!
Crys: Was fairly good.  The tileset was ok, but it wasn't very fun to play.. I gave up after I realized I had to go back for plasma.

Sadiztyk: Best christmas themed graphics.  Completely changed the gameplay, which was good.  I thought the music was good for a mini hack, as I wouldn't have to put up with it for too long.  I had 1 hat remaining, then I gave up.

GF: Certainly not what I was expecting from a christmas hack, but it still looked great.  Gameplay was ordinary, and the Bangs annoyed me.

Person: Well.. I didn't get very far into this. Ceres.. really?  The pallet change wasn't great.  I played through a couple of rooms, and then I got perma-stuck, and I couldn't be bothered restarting.

Squishy: Hmm.. It was a good idea, that could be fun, but wasn't.  However, the graphics were really good.

Well,  they were all great, but the winner for me was Sadiztyk's, followed closely by GF's hack.

Well I finally played them all a few times.
This was probably my favourate in terms of graphics and gameplay. It's was just something completely different to the usual metroid, and I loved it. The physics were a bit hard to master, but I didn't dislike them.
The permsastuck opportunities were a bad point in this game, but thaty's probably cause I just hate permastucks in all forms (hell, I even hate stucks that aren't permanent but take some time to get out of >.>). I'm giving this one first, cause of the new gameplay, superb graphics, and just general fun-ness =).

This one was also very good. I'm ignoring the fact that Ceres was in the game, as you said it was an accident, and anyone could make that mistake, so let's pretend it wasn't there at all =)
Graphics were again very nice, but the orange palette didn't fit with the graphics at all. The bosses didn't have a lot to do with the game IMO, and were just obstacles to jump over annoyingly.
I loled sooo much when I saw the Kirby holding up the ET in Ridley's room though; that was just hilarious! People said there were four (possibly more?) kirby "villages" in the game, but I only found one at the top right of the LS.
A very nice aesthetic I thought of would've been to put treadmills along the slopes, so when you touched them you slid down them =D

There's several things I had to bring up with this:
1. The graphics were so freakin excellent it was hard not to vote for this one solely for that reason.
2. I liked the fact that you start the game pretty much straight away, that was a nice touch. (to people who were complaining about controls, change the emulator input settings durrr =P).
3. This had pretty much nothing to do with Christmas, so I can't really vote for it =(

Now about the hack, the first few rooms were very pleasing to go through. Some rooms were quite random though. I didn't see any point to the reflecs, though I spent a good 5 minutes trying t figure them out. Other than that it was pretty much an everyday boss rush with excellent GFX.

This is another that slightly disappointed me, but I understand the tight timeframe you probably had. I only saw the thread 2 weeks ago, and end up pulling 5 or 6 all-nighters to get it done.
The Ceres part was unneccessary, but this was not finished, so I guess that's why. I got permastuck in the same place 3 times (yes, don't laugh), then when I figured out how to open the gate, I went through the door and CRASH!!! So I can't really vote on this one either, as it wasn't completable. TBH, if it was that unfinished, I wouldn't have entered it, but no matter =).

I'm not voting for this one either, as it was mine, but there's some things I want to bring up.
The jump for the underwater hat in the snow can be easily made by standing at the very right edge of the floating platform. No run-up needed.
The underwater hat hidden under the icicle can be collected by running INTO the cave without jumping, and just flying down to it (given by the hint)
The hat in the first room was supposed to be collected by running from the room before it, jumping just before hitting the door, then using the height boost to reach the platform.
The hat in the last room was to be collected in a similar way, but with a mid-air morph as well.

The reason the elf was a one hit kill was because getting hurt normally caused the energy numbers to screw up (reason there was no harmful enemies, as your energy would appear to go up). There's actually 199 health there, but because I changed the numbers around, it looks like 100. If you would like to know how I did the ASM for this hack, I'll tell you, but some things I took from Impulsion which I don't want to be released just yet (reason it was locked from SMILE)

Here's a vid =)

It's funny that the people that complain that my hack is too hard are those that did not find my hidden items. :P
