Casual gamer looking for a recommendation.

I'm just looking for a recommendation of a Metroid hack to purchase on a SNES cart and where to purchase.  I'm a casual gamer with mostly vintage systems and I will go years at a time without playing any of them.  The hacking concept is new to me.  I'd love to learn but that's not why I'm here.  Super Metroid is one of my favorite games. I've completed it a few times with out a game genie or anything. I have to use it on some other games.  I have metroid for Game Cube but only tried it for a few minutes and didn't like it.  I'm basically looking for Super Metroid 2 for SNES.  Which should I get and where?  I didn't think Phazon from reproduction games looked bad.  I really don't want anything harder than the original.  And out of curiosity do game genie codes work with hacks?  Thoughts?  Thanks.

While I don't recommend all of them, here is the hacks page. Now, I'm not putting this here because I think you're blind, but rather to give you a source to download the fine hacks we've made and accumulated here, patch them, and then use any of the following methods to play these hacks:

  • Purchase an sd2snes or the less expensive Super Everdrive. Both of these accompany a slot for SD cards which is where you place hacks and then play them on an actual SNES console.
  • If you happen to have a Wii and don't mind the classic controller, go softmod your Wii. Once that's done, download the SnesGX emulator and play from there (will also require an SD card).
  • And finally, there's always the option of buying a SNES controller adapter for you PC. Install an emulator, plug in your controller, and play!
There are two major reasons (that come to mind immediately) why I suggest all of this over buying already carted hacks. First and foremost, you're saving yourself money in the long run if you plan to play a fair amount of these things. The second reason being that, despite whatever debates we may have had about this in the past, I'm fairly certain the lot of us don't particularly enjoy a nobody taking others work, carting it, and selling it. Even if they don't claim it as their own, it's still fairly... frowned upon is the best way I can think to put it (at least to me). Not to mention it's also illegal to sell them in the first place...

Which brings up another thing! If you plan to use any of my above suggestions, you'll need to find yourself a clean Super Metroid JU (Japanese/English) ROM (and make sure it's not E/European). Everything we distribute around here is done via .ips patches which helps with keeping things more on the legal side.Though to be fair, if anyone actually cared, this site would likely be C&D'd already...

All that said, if you would still like to go and purchase carted hacks for the sake of having them as such, no one here will stop you, nor do I think that we can. I wouldn't know the best place to purchase them either, but what I do know is not all the great hacks will be found on carts. Hopefully all those words up there --^ are enough to convince you doing otherwise.

Like I had mentioned this is really new to me so in a way I am blind. Lol.  You just at least quadrupled my knowledge of these things. The only reason I was looking at buying a cart is because it was the only method I knew of. I do have a Wii and just looked it up last night for the first time in a couple years.  I did update it, was that a mistake?  I thought I saw somewhere it can prevent the soft mod or something?  I don't really even know what a soft mod is or how to do it.  I did see an adapter to allow a SNES controller on the Wii.  Those SD to SNES adapters look great as well.  Do they make that for NES as well?  I'll search in a bit but figured I'd just ask.
I didn't even k.ow what a JU ROM was so I found it on [redacted]. it looks free?  So I need to put that on the SD card along with whatever I down load here?  And can I basically download any SNES to an SD card and play?  Thank you so much for the help, I'm probably the biggest noob this board has ever seen.  Lol.

You remind me of myself when i first found out about rom hacks

The .ips patches person mentioned basically contains all the info to convert the original game into the hack. If you don't know how to apply these patches, read this.

I don't know too much about using SD cards in cartridges for the SNES, i've only done it for a DS and that wasn't using hacks. I know there are some hacks that don't work on an actual SNES, so you'll have to use an emulator for them.

Usually in order to play import / pirated games, you need to modify your console.  Modding a console involves opening up your console and changing or installing something inside it.  Soft modding is enabling the same functionality through a piece of software.

It's technically illegal in most countries, but we all do it, and our community wouldn't exist without it. :^_^:

There are usually two ways to apply a patch.  Soft patching, which is where you have both the ROM and patch in the same location, and the emulator automatically applies it when you load it, and hard patching, which is where you apply the patch directly to your ROM to create a new ROM.  Usually for what you're doing you'll be hard patching.

can I basically download any SNES to an SD card and play?
Yes, you can pretty much download any SNES ROM and play it on your SNES. :^_^:

Ok I've downloaded a JU ROM.  I'm going to try my luck at hard patching before I spend any money.  I work all day at a computer but I'm really not that computer savvy.  lol.  I'm looking for a hack that is similar in length and difficulty as the original.  I probably wont be able to complete a more difficult one.  I'm going to try Phazon.  If someone has a recommendation other than that let me know, but I'll probably be working on Phazon by the time I get it.  Also did someone on here make Phazon?  If so does that mean the sites selling it on a cart downloaded it from this site?  And I'm leaning towards playing it on the SNES but the Wii would be another option.  Thanks again for everyones help.
And kind of off topic.  From what I can tell those Everdrives are made by Nintendo?  Why don't they come in case, why did Nintendo make them, are they still made and why do they cost so much?  lol.

I probably wouldn't start with Phazon.  I haven't played much of it, but I'm sure I've heard others mention that it has changes that make it tougher than the original.  I'd recommend Life, Dependence, Golden Dawn, and maybe Legacy.
Quote from: Blown 331 on November 16, 2014, 11:10:43 AMAlso did someone on here make Phazon?
Yes, Red Monkey made it.  Also, it's not technically finished yet, though you can play it all the way through.

Probably, or they got it from another site that downloaded it from here.  It's a common topic, but the story in a nutshell is that those people are making money of other people's work, and there's nothing that anybody can do about it.

Legacy might be a good start for something similar to vanilla in terms of length and difficulty.

I would doubt that nintendo would make a cart that stores roms on an sd card. They were made for nintendo consoles, probably not by nintendo themselves. That's like an author pirating his own book.

Never the less, welcome to MetConst, and happy hacking.

You know, we would probably save time in the long run from all these "recommend X hack" threads if our hack section on the site was not utter shit to browse.

If you don't want something on the hard side (you seemed to imply that you're not that skilled at video games in your opening post.) then that limits your options when it comes to hacks.

I'm glad you're all ears. :^_^:

This is okay should I remember correctly. Here is a tutorial I remember using years ago and has done me well since then. Follow everything to a tee and you should be in the clear if you choose to do this.

To be honest, I'm not sure but I would not doubt it.

AHHHHHHHHHH. He posted a rom site. Fixed. ;P And yeah, if you're ever paying money for ROMs, know that you're being ripped off.

Correct. Like I said, you'll need to patch your ROMs. I suggest making a backup of a clean ROM (one that has no changes to it whatsoever) then scurry off and follow the link Jordan dropped. Glad to help and don't worry, you are not the noobiest of noobs we've seen. If you were, we'd probably be even more awesome. :bounce:

And since Crys has sniped me on responding as I was previewing my post, here's two topics we've had on discussion of preferred hacks if you're feeling inclined to look through them. Bloop and blaap.

Blown 331

I think I'm finally understanding.  I'm still unsure if I should play on the SNES or Wii but I'm leaning towards SNES even though that costs more.
I like to think I'm ok at video games but far from what other people an do, I did finish Super Metroid several times with out cheating but its a decent challenge for me, I don't want anything crazy harder than that.  Really about the only games I've finished without cheating on 16 bit and newer systems are Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Resident Evil 2 on N64, Resident Evil 0 on Game Cube.  There could be more I'm not thinking of  I've done SNES Zelda using infinite magic power, I could probably finish without but I havent.  I see the Zelda hacks too, I'm interested in those as well.  I guess if I got a hack that was too hard I could always game genie it, but I'd rather not.
I just started a new Super Metroid game.  I had to delete and old completed game.  My times are in the 7 hour range. The guy I found who sells the hacks on carts has NES games I want to try, one being Contra 7 which I've found can be downloaded in its hacked form so I'll probably go that route there.  Thanks again.

Quietus

If I were you, I'd steer clear of the Zelda hacks.  They are almost always harder than the original game, with some being deliberately designed to be hard. :^_^:
