A significant amount of how a room looks is due to the tileset. To ignore that is ridiculous; people put custom tilesets in the game to make rooms look better and more interesting, so actually it is kind of the point of RotW. Also, if no-one else has built rooms with that tileset it helps to user get feedback on what looks good and what doesn't so they can make their rooms look better in the future. I don't know about you, but RotW isn't about winning, but getting feedback, improving and seeing what others do that looks good.

I would agree with you, if not for the fact that much of the feedback is along the lines of "Pretty straightforward. Well made. Doesn't particularly stand out." - far too vague to be of any real use.

It's not a serious competition, so can't we just get along. :neutral:

For fuck's sake. What on earth is your deal man? I vote based on the tilesets this week because judging solely on their structure and layout wouldn't have worked because all of the rooms this week had average to borderline shitty as fuck ones.

I felt like actually giving an opinion (and lets keep in mind that's what it is, it's a motherfuckin opinion), because structurally speaking the rooms had very little merit. I wanted to provide some feedback, and I chose to do it in such a way that was constructive as opposed to this ranty shitfit bitchfest I have pretty much single handedly turned this into. Whoops.
Maybe you should stop being a pretentious cockwit and look at shit from more than just your own bullshitty ass narrow view of things. I'm sick of seeing this idiotic motherfucking bitching over a shitty ass competition that means jack shit.

As i said before, i think use almost a full tile set for the one single room it's a cheat, just like a "Layer 2 scroll=0". By the way I'm sure, that you set "$8F Scroll pointers" to 0000. That means, in the game, we can't see two rows of tiles at the top and bottom of the room. But you added it anyway, because you want have nice picture even if it pointless in the game. I'm sure, what this room was made just for "ROTW", and it's not a part of next-gen hack. I perceive this room as fun stuff. But it's nice room and good work anyway!

No one's "ingnoring all these other things" at all, but the fact is it's true that if the gfx look like shit then it doesn't matter what you do with the room, people will dislike it. So yes the tileset is an important part of the room. It's not the /only/ part but maybe if you stop putting words in other people's mouths, then you might be able to have a reasonable conversation.

Honestly, that is a really shitty thing to complain about. You have a whole bunch of people who are happy to complement and criticize the work that you decide to show them, and then you complain that what they have to say isn't good enough. Actually, the fun is in showing off the communities creativity, teasing new hacks, and having a fun competition with the other members in a contest with no prizes, except for what the community has to say about the rooms, which everyone who submits gets (in general). But you seem to be actively trying to take away that fun with ignorant attempts to show how awful everyone but you is. How about this instead, you go have fun insulting friendly competitions in real life, and if you don't get your ass kicked too hard, you can also not come back! How's that sound?  :grin:

This is supposed to be a friendly competition to get feedback on the things you make. If people like you two continue to work against that, I will personally remove your posts so we can continue to have a fun, wholesome competition.

Actually, I have to disagree with you here. Being the room is built for ZM, I feel that he can get away with this more than someone would in SM. Due in part mainly because of faster game play. Not to mention there is an instance or two where ZM does this itself.

Nobody has said that you were only supposed to be voting on the tileset.  It was mentioned that people vote for different reasons, and one person saying that they vote on the graphic set while another votes on the layout of the room is fine, despite their differing reasons.  If you wish to rate the room as a whole, that's fine too.  It doesn't mean that anybody is right or wrong.

You could show everyone that a custom tileset does always win by building a fucking awesome vanilla ZM room. Or rip some cool graphics from another game and use that to build rooms with?

Not winning (easily) is good for you, it pushes you to build better rooms the next week, so everyone benefits from it. Don't argue with everyone, just show them with an awesome room and they might think differently next time.

Sometimes it seems like first of all, people vote for their friends, and only after this, they vote for the room. And sometimes it's too obviously. I don't want to offend anyone, or to say that this contest is not fair, for example fake accounts or something like this. I just sometimes can't understand the voting results.
Return to the main forum list and check out how many people make NES hacks, and how many people make SNES hacks. I make a screenshot, so you don't have to.

I've been here for over a year now and i've never got the feeling that people vote for their friends. If that were true then anyone new wouldn't ever get a vote.

Of course you don't always understand the results. Not everyone is going to have the same opinion on which room is best, that's why we vote. Sometimes the person you vote for won't win, that happens. It's all down to personal preference.

But yeah, if you don't like losing or think people are being unfair etc. then don't join in to this completely voluntary competition.

When I joined the forum a few years ago, one of the first things I did was submit a room to the first rotw of that year. Not one person here knew me or had any sort of friendship with me, yet I won. Then I won again, and again. Not because I had friends but because people liked my style of room building. You need to have a little faith in the people here that we won't play favourites. Hell you even won multiple times so if you're saying that new people don't get votes just look to yourself!
The reason M1 rooms can beat super metroid rooms and zm as well is two fold. Firstly, zm rooms have been almost entirely just been a new palette and small room changes. Before hawntah in fact we pretty much never saw zm rooms of the size of his last entry (or whichever the large one was). And I don't think we've ever had a fusion room submitted to contest.
Secondly, some of the rooms that people like snarf and grimlock have made, are mindblowing considering the limitations of the system. So when you take into account that the rooms are using 4 colour 8 bit gfx, it's easy to see why a room that looks incredible for M1, can beat a room that looks only okay for SM.
People don't win this voluntary, friendly competition because they are the community favourites, they win because their room appealed to the voters the most.
