Double Helix editor crash

Ok so it has been awhile since I have even touched an ips, rom, or any of the metroid editors.  I just got a new computer, and decided, "Hey why not play some metroid."  After getting the roms for fusion and zm and playing them full length, I decided to download Double Helix editor, and followed the normal instructions for installing it.

Now when I launch the map editor, I get the titleset and map windows for a few seconds, but they then precede to close themselves.  I suspect my windows 8 operating system is the source of the problem, but I am not sure.
