Editing Rooms using different tilesets on DH Help

I'm still green when it comes to hacking but I have managed to have control over editing stages using the tiles for the stage. I have wanted to use other tile sets as well as expanding rooms but some attempts corrupt the room. I've read on youtube some users talk about opening the hacked rom and an unedited rom into a hex editor and copying the first few lines of hex over to the hacked rom.

Any advice/help on this is welcome. I've been wanting to make a Zero Mission that retains the look of the game but edited to favor the original layouts more. Hacking is a growing hobby of mine and I would love to learn more tricks to do the edits I want. By the way is there any editor for ZM that allows you to use any tilesets for one room? I want to make Mother Brain's chamber closer to it's look from the original/Super Metroid's Flashback. Thanks!

To edit tilesets, activate the header editor and choose from the list.

I know to do that, I meant to phrase it differently. I know that I can switch to any tileset and work from there. But I've wondered if it was possible to combine certain tiles from other rooms ie Tourian room 4 I'd like to take tiles from set 28 and 1A. I heard it wasn't possible for DH as I tried several options like taking specific tiles and putting them on a clip board etc.

Aside from that I tried to take different tile sets and extend the size of rooms somewhat but the final product became corrupted. I've read that one method of fixing that was to swap hex codes between an unaltered rom and the hacked rom. Finally I'd like to know, some videos on youtube showed it was possible to hack the first room using double helix to give you all weapons and take an elevator straight to mother brain's room from the second room you enter after collecting all the preset power ups.

Ah, okay. In short here's what you'd need to do.
Find the Tileset table, dump the tilesets you need and decompress them along with their palettes. Combine them in an tile editor. Then recompress and put them back in the ROM.

I still kind of have plans for DH to have a tileset importer, but the effort on it will take a forever.... @_@

Hmm ok well I hope you consider it at some point lol it would make my learning easier. But doing things the tough way will help break me into hacking. Double Helix has been good so far but from the looks of things I would need other programs to do in depth hacking which is where I need to start learning or finding good tutorials online.

So I would need to get a tile editor for the gba to dump the tilesets into? See, I need to find either a good tutorial or an article to read because this would be my first crack at it. Sorry if i'm a little layman on things, I've only been dabbling into tile editors as i'm looking for good tutorials that would show me how to get the tiles/sprites to show. Any in depth info in simpler terms would be great, just enough so I can hopefully extract the tiles I want and create a new tileset for DH so I can edit MBs chamber the way I want to.

looks like you forgot a ']' in there.

well in terms of gfx editing, there are a ton of options. TLP is the most comfortable imo, but you have lots to choose from. Just check the tools section of the main site.
Don't know how to deal with the compressed gfx of fusion, but with the help of the community I'm sure you'll get it

Yeah I'm still getting used to doing posts as this is the first forum I've signed onto hopefully this post is corrected in the reply. And alrighty, i'm hoping to catch onto and start off in depth hacking. My goal is to make a version of Zero Mission that while using the same tiles in the game (especially tiles from other rooms) I want to make it match the original more with backgrounds taken from super metroid.

Though off topic oddly enough someone had ripped the Mother Brain sprite/s from the flashback of Super Metroid I hope with some tweaking that could be used in a hack.

jaegar do you still need help with this? Because I can tell you right now you won't ever find Zero Mission's tilesets using a tile editor. Unless there's a tile editor out there that can decompress the compressed images in a ROM (and I've never seen one of those before). Because, as interdpth said, Zero Mission's tilesets are compressed. You can find sprites, HUD icons, and some other stuff using a tile editor, including the "common" tiles (shoot block, fall thru block, bomb block, missile block, etc.)

But you may have figured it out already, since it's been 14 days since your last post.

I've inserted tilesets into ZM before, and as you can see, interdpth can't be arsed to give you a detailed walkthrough. If you still need help, let me know. I've got a lot of information I'm ready to divulge.

Sorry for the very late reply on this I haven't been on here in quite a while, just now got back to editing (hacking and video editing) again, the thing is I'm very new to 'advanced' hacking and TLP I would have to have a lot of hand holding to get good at it on a base level. I had watched videos on how to clean up the jarbled sprite mess you get when you load the rom but nothing really cleared up using the method I watched.

So far alot of what I looked at doing or wanted to do was either eliminate some sprite animation elements (ie the brain lazer blast in ZM) and be able to at least use other tiles from the rooms to re-create the mother brain chamber to look closer to what it did in super/the original metroid.

Fuck it, I might as well make a fuckin tutorial.

I'm going to try and hang around here a bit more often but if you do have a tutorial I would appreciate the help.

Not really since I should have gotten back on here months ago, there's been some issues I've ran across with using DH recently (placed tiles and clip data are miss-placed when testing the level the height and width aren't changed either that could have been the rom however I downloaded a fresh one since then).

And since I sort of stopped for a while due to my job and focusing more on my art etc. But I've gotten back into it and I still am where I'm at as far as editing goes having to rely on the editor programs but yes if you get these messages hit me back I could use all the help I can get to re-create mother brains chamber I recently re-played Zero Mission to get to her chamber because I don't yet know how to hack elevators to skip right to it like some hackers do.

I have been wanting to tweak with sprites as well like the advanced hackers did with modifying mother brains SM sprite and altering the robot body scripted fight altogther. But just eliminating the ZM brain blast and eliminating the eye while having the wrinkles replace the eye so that every missle blast is a hit like in the original metroid. My goal is for the moment to make Zero Mission's Zebes as close to the original in terms of some set piece design and Mother Brains chamber to mimic Super's Old Tourian. I would really like to learn more of hacking in general, Any advice or links to tutorials would be appreciated so far I only know that if you are to use a certain tile set for a stage in DH you have to use ALL the tiles from that room, you can't mix and match them or build a tileset from the other room sets.
