Update: Although development has been very slow, this hack is still alive.

Alpharus is going to be my first fullhack. Won't be anything too horribly new in terms of cool features, but I'm hoping that some of the twists will be at least somewhat interesting. Here is a rundown of the features:

-It's intended to be a full hack; all items, all bosses. The play style is intended to be more geared toward exploration.
-Minor hex edits (i.e. scrolling, added doors, FX1, some physics tweaks, etc; nothing complex until I have the time and dedication to learn the art of assembly).
-The hack might be a tad on the short side once finished, but item percentage is expected to amount to 100%.
-As an experimental type of thing, you start off with a powerless beam that can only open doors and break shot blocks. It does no damage until you find Charge. And even then, you might be pretty reliant on missiles, so it will be very important to save ammo.
-So far, this hack is on the easy side. A lot of the challenge that comes from this hack is puzzle-based. I'd love to hear opinions on this, especially once I get a demo patch out there.

An elevator shaft:

Will have a demo patch up soon.

QuarterCircleMetroid

You had me sold at powerless beam.

Hopefully this inspires you to do more than 5%, much less post a topic with only one screenshot. I'll be expecting some more shots of progress soon, partner.

Quietus

It's always nice to see a new project announced. :^_^:

I'd suggest that you not get too carried away with coloured text in your posts, as it can be hard for people to read when using different themes for the forum.

Any hints as to what your hack's play style will be?  Is it meant to be harder?  Exploration based, or fairly linear?

I'm astounded that someone can think about making a hack, proceed to design the entirety of said hack in their mind, make a post on a forum dedicated to hacking so others can revel in the accomplishment that has been made by creating said hack, then completely forget to have a play style of said hack.

It's just despicable, isn't it Quietus?
The play style comes from actually making a hack, not by thinking a hack.
After reading over this, it sounds like I'm annoyed at Quietus, which I am not D: I just don't care for topics for hacks that have barely been started and provide only one screenshot of a room that either of us could have made in 30 seconds.

I'll go lick my wounds.

All right, I've updated it. Hopefully to the satisfaction of the people.

I see bubbles. Wonderful bubbles. I WILL COMPLAIN ABOUT THEM ANYWAY. The palette is pretty good, until the glow. . . Seriously, remove the glow, or change the glow to a palette that will fit with the bubbles better.

Up until the glow yes. Once the glow hits, no. Just no.

you mean how they look under the lava? i see no glow other than that.

MetroidMst

You must go back and look up bubble 101. The glow is any part of the bubble that is still yellow/orange. all of that area of the bubble is the glow portion, and it will be changing hues and strength as the glow works. It will go all the way to red in some parts, and back down to the more yellow/orange you see in the picture. All in all, the glow can be used for good, if the glow palette is changed. As is, it won't look as good as it could. (Either by turning off the glow, or making the glow palette(s) different.)

Vismund Cygnus

Never argue with mst about bubbles.  :whoa:

But this is looking great so far! keep up the excellent work man.

Digital_Mantra

Love that last pic with the dark haze under sand ceiling, it works really well.

ah, i get it.
seeing as there isn't a gif of the glow in action though (or having enough experience to know what it would look like), i can't say whether i'd change it or leave it as is.

It's a red-orange glow, kind of hard to describe in detail.
My plans are to split Norfair into an ice-hot level, in which both extreme cold and extreme heat cause damage without the Varia suit. I'm planning on using the bubbles in parts of the icy area, so I might give them a light blue-white glow. It'll take some experimenting.

QuarterCircleMetroid

I always thought there needed to be more icy sections in the Metroid games. Much like MST with his bubbles, I'm obsessed with snow and any section of any game that features a "snow" world I am fascinated by. Revolution EX and what I saw of Aegis ( I think it has some icy area, not sure ) did a great job there. Metroid Prime with Phendrana Drifts was great, and the short section of ice in Other M was brilliant. I guess you can say that I think icy areas are

cool.

:nowai:

Icy what you did there...

This here sounds very interesting. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Snow way we can bend the rules to allow puns?  I got a tundra get rid of.

On topic: I'm curious about your hex edits, djdabomb.  What you've mentioned sounds to my tastes, with nothing really affecting gameplay.  Are you keeping more of a vanilla feel to movement, or are you likely to go for the now commonplace spin-jump restart and keeping speed on landing?

QuarterCircleMetroid

As it is right now this hack seems to be on a

slippery slope.

Funny you should mention that. I actually did throw in the keeping speed on landing, and integrated a little speed booster puzzle involving that. I might make a few more hex changes regarding physics, though I'll have to look more into it.

Cold.
Anyway, I've added another image. Getting around 1/4 done.

QuarterCircleMetroid

Chill out, TC.

We're all cool here.
