Uncertainty - ASCII faces and smilies and such

Parabox

You know 'em. Faces, but made by typing characters. Example: _o/ . This one is the first half of a high-five of course. But about two little guys I had some uncertainty. I never knew which way <.< and >.> are looking. The pointing >'s and <'s tell me that it looks that way. The open part, which reminds of an actual eye says that it looks to the open part. Just wanted to be clarified about this.

Paradox: I always thought it was that the eye was pointing in the direction of the arrow, hence why the arrows were used in the first place. If that fails to kickstart your imagination, then just think shifty eyes, although not as covert as, say, ¬.¬ . (See where the "eyebrow" line and the actual pupils are located on that smiley?)
