Pretty nifty hack. But you should make cliffs prior to morphball 3 tiles high or this happens:

I was however able to get out via spin-jumping.

I got perma-stuck here, though:

I'm still playing, liking it so far.

EDIT: Alright, made it to Red Brinstar, which I'm assuming is where the hack ends. Some parts were kinda sadistic, but I enjoyed it :D

Bro you released .2 back in early 2008 on m2k2 under the name ridleybeta84... have you done anything to it since then? Are you picking it back up? If so, glad to hear, I will change it from dead to wip in my hacks folder.

Edit: I've found multiple threads for Rebirth

Not bad, but felt very similar to what I played before, even the bugs.

Echoing the two-block permastuck problem above.  There should be nowhere before Morph that is two blocks high, otherwise players can get stuck.
I still seem to be able to get permastuck to the right of the ship.  IBJ up, fall through, and cannot get out.  There are Power Bomb blocks to the left, but I didn't see anything else.
There seem to be a number of broken ramps, as they have no square BTS blocks behind them.
Gauntlet was fun without Grapple.

Quote from: FullOfFail on July 23, 2012, 03:31:38 PMAlright, made it to Red Brinstar, which I'm assuming is where the hack ends.

At that time we were working on it, but it freezed cause of unknown problems. Now we've worked on SMR again with new SMILE, problems were fixed. The second Thread is none of our Threads :)

Thanks for the replies, we've fixed the bugs and continue our work.

Qactis

awesome man can't wait to see more, it's a bit far down the list of hacks I need to finish though man lol

Quietus

I also forgot to mention that heading back down to the morph area straight after getting bombs made the background glitch out for me.

Crazykong

Good luck testing Red-Brinstar / Kraids Dungeon :p...

What would you say, is the hack too hard, hard, just mean or easy?
We need some minds about it, coz we're going to make the next parts a little bit harder.

Generally speaking, what I've played so far seems about right (except the gauntlet ).  The thing to remember about difficulty is that it's fine to increase it as long as there's balance.  Having tough room after tough room soon irritates players.  Having a tough room, followed by an easier room with a fairly easy way of refilling health, is balanced.  Having a few tough rooms together followed by an energy recharge station, or an easy-to-obtain Energy Tank is balanced.

A good way to think about your difficulty is to imagine that you were playing it on an actual SNES.  If you didn't have save states, and you had to reload from your last save if you died, is the hack / area / room fun or frustrating?

Edit: Just tested the updates, and it seems like you've removed a lot of the fun / exploration, and replaced it with a hard-type hack.  If it's a hard type-hack you're going for, then that's fine, but I can tell you that most players won't play it.  Everything up to this last update seemed fine.  I'm not sure which direction you wish to take it in, to be honest.

Prime Hunter

Yeah I'm assuming the last room is the water one with the Skrees after the first Red Brinstar shaft since I couldn't jump onto the next platform because of the water.

Overall I felt the game was more challenging than the normal Super is, but I'm not sure how I feel about the reasons it's more challenging to be honest. Enemies have more health and do a lot more damage than normal, but the health items actually heal you for less than they usually do and it forces you to rely more on your missiles, which admittedly is always welcome since it gives you more of a reason to hunt for the expansions. Combined with some of the enemy placements, especially in halls where there might not be a lot of room to navigate or when you come out of a door and straight into an unavoidable enemy, the difficulty felt a little uneven at times. The amount of spikes I had to navigate around did get a little frustrating at points as well, but not enough to steer me away completely like some other hacks I've played since they weren't overdone, but these were certainly noticeable.

I'd agree with Quietus's ideas on how to maintain a good balance for the overall difficulty though. Really depends on what type of hack you're looking to create in the end and what audience you're aiming for.

As far as getting stuck goes, either I missed something in the Brinstar elevator shaft or it is possible to get permastuck in there when you get to the upper levels and don't have enough missiles to get through one of the doors. Since I'd been using them to take out enemies I only had a handful when I got there the first time around and the only ways out I could see were a locked door, a set of power bomb blocks in the floor leading back to the elevator, and a bunch of missile doors I couldn't open since there were no more enemies I could grind off of to get more missiles. An easy way you could avoid that is to simply let the path leading to the missile recharge be behind a blue door instead.

No, there's more after that too, right up to early Norfair / Kraid, but it gets more spikey.

Also, there was a scroll bug after getting Bombs and trying to head back to the landing site.  Just before the last door prior to the landing site the screen stops scrolling.  You can still get through the door fine, but you can't see it.

Oh, and I can still get through the gauntlet.  Are you leaving this as-is?

Cloud20

I noticed another scroll bug when you turn back after space pirates and mini-kraid (I defeated Kraid and collected Varia), but continue to play until another problem in the same room : the door leading back have a wrong door orientation and does'nt lead correctly to this room, it must be leading to down way, not left  :^_^:

For the hack, it is quite hard, may be too much sometimes (skree are very too dangerous) but I liked how to exploit certains rooms and made it bigger than original. Good luck to continue your work. :)

Prime Hunter

Played up through Kraid after you mentioned that, and yeah, that is exactly the kind of spike use that will turn me away from a hack if it's used too much. Pixel perfect jumping just to navigate through the terrain, if it's not just for one or two rooms here and there, is not my idea of fun.

Crazykong

Well we fixed all reported and known bugs/glitches. Thanks for all reports, suggestions and minds :)
We also changed some "pixel-perfect-jumps" or mean Enemys.
Thanks for the help and still have fun :)

Crazykong

Hi there :)
just an info for you ;D...

atm we are changing some huge things, which need some time :) but it'll be really cool if we're done *-*
sooo just a little bit more time and you can play the next part :p (changed till wracked ship then (hope))

Crazykong

Btw we're still alive :p

We've finished upper Norfair completly. *yay*
Now we're going to fix some graphic "things" and bugs and some weird rooms (coz of low space)
Sooo soon we can give u the first "demo" of the game.. why demo? Coz then we almost finished the half of the game :p

Well and another info:

Uhh my english isn't the best so it may could sound a bit weird but i'll try to explain.
For the first we're just going to do some "little" changes like edit all Maps, change Routes and Enemys and later, if we finished all that, we'll change the whole Map and so on.. :O hopely it will all work!
See you soon :o

cant belive that you would steal my credit for this! im ridleybeta84, who later became phantomhacker and have finally settled for reaper901. and the hack was scrapped due to it being my first and i wanted so much more out of it, i suggest you start again and chose another name. wouldnt have been an issue if you weren't trying to palm my hack off as yours, u ass

and yes i have picked the work back up in a planning stage atm. still got more hex and gfx issues to deal with but once done it'l be sweet. and before you say it im not a fake check out m2k2 for my follow up hack WIP'S super metroid x investigation.

you should have a topic prety soon all you non asses that want my actual work lol.

Peace

Hmm, I can seeing this needing to be resolved before a flame war commences.  Can either of you offer any early, dated proof?

rest assured im not about to start a war over the net about hack which tbh i dont care for. my only issue was that he/she/whatever openly admitted that it was a hack which they made, false allegation. now as far as proof goes all i can say is why would i go ahead and make something up like this just for the hell of it? i would much rather be working on my current project with critique instead of getting stuck into a drama,it may jut be a misunderstanding but im waiting for an explination or at least a simple apology will suffice.

Put simply, we have two people, both of whom say they created something.  The only real way to solve the issue would be for one to provide proof.

We all know that plagiarism within the hacking world happens, but most of us usually frown upon it, and actively avoid / slate plagiarised works.  If you're really not bothered, then I'd suggest you ignore it, but since you were bothered enough to mention it, I presume you'd like some resolution, even if it is just an acknowledgment.

Crazykong

o.o.. Well.. re started this hack 29.06.2009.
http://m2k2.taigaforum.com/post/sm_super_metroid_rebirth_wip.html

Before we chose this name (Rebirth), we used google to check out the Name. There was nothing about Super Metroid Rebirth Hack so...

Quote58

Well, looking at the two threads linked earlier, the one ridleybeta84 made was in 2008 whereas the one SonicSpieler made was in 2009. So, later on.

Crazykong

Next question, who cares?^^
Your hack seems called "Metroid Rebirth"
Our is called "Super Metroid Rebirth Hack"
Soo??
