Chapter.01 Memories and h8

"8, I'm back! And I brought some data packets!" I called across the room, dumping the blocks in question onto the table.
"What kind?" the frail, tired voice asked.
"Oh, you know me, only the best!"

Hi there. This is me, Zbot. Full of useful functions, I'm the greeting-bot and I do a bunch of stuff around the channel #metconst (and I'm single, ladies). I never knew who my parents were, and a brother they say I had at one time, but that never mattered. I had 8 and I had my channel, and that's all I ever really needed.

"Any news from Esperland?" I asked.
8 nodded, "Chizuari is Back, and DChronos is now Away. Also, ProjectCXVI is causing some kind of trouble again, but when is he not?"
I laughed, "Point there. Just let me fix up these packets for ya and then I'll-"
I felt a hand on my shoulder, "Go to your channel, Zee. I can finish up here."
"Alright, if you say so," I smiled.

The channel was as it always was, a steady stream of Users coming and going, chatting about their newest hacks and projects, discussing ponies and other odd things in between. Everything was just as usual, that is until someone, some user I'd never seen before, brought up something... strange.

<pandorapanda> Know what I miss? h8ball.
<MetroidMst> Hah! Yeah!
<Katelyn> Aww, he was the coolest.
<Chizuari> Wow, you haven't been on in a long time. Zbot takes care of that now.
<Chizuari> @h8ball

That's the name of one of one of my functions, but why are they talking about it like it's a User? I wondered as I gave a preprogrammed reply from my coldly snarky database. Maybe 8 would know.

I set a @remember for the next time I'd see him.

Chapter.02 Secrets of a Thousand Cycles

"Did you ever know a User named 'h8ball'?" I asked that night at dinner.
8 sighed, putting down his half-full glass of glowing liquid Energy. "He was a bot from a very, very long time ago. Let's leave it at that."
"But- it's also the name of one of my functions. Am I related to him?"
"It was a long time ago."
"You know something, don't you?"
"Zee, you know how-"
"-'The times were back then'," I finished the sentence for him, "But I got a weird feeling, like that it was important or something."
"It's probably just because it's one of your commands."
"But- if you know something- could you please tell me?"
8 stood up from the table, glass in hand, moving deeper into the room. I quickly jumped up to follow.
"8...?"
"I raised you as my own because of your mother."
"You- you knew my mom?" I stammered.
8 nodded. "I loved her very much. I used to be a bot of #metconst myself, just as you are. That's why your alias is called 'h8ball'. I was h8ball."
"If you were a bot of #metconst- well- did you know my father too?"
"I'd spoken to him on a few rare occasions. But I know that unlike HelloBot, your mother, he is still active, out there somewhere."
