What to start a ALTTP hack with?

I have wanted to make a lttp hack for years but never got around to it because of school and other restrictions.

Now I have the time and desire to finally make one and am getting started on planning it on paper before I start fooling around with Hmagic.

What I want to know is what editor I should start modding the sprites/textures and overworld with. I have read all about blk magic and such but the only download link I could find is the version 0.09a which seems kind of broken when it comes to editing as of the moment. Is that the latest public version? I have read all about the problems with hmagic but it seems that is the only editor I can use right now.

Oh and which version of ALTTP should I use as a base (which country [e] [!] etc and date created) or does it matter?

Im asking these questions in advance so when i get started on the actual editing ill be ready.

As far as editors are concerned, you basically have Hyrule Magic.  Black Magic is in the works, which looks to iron out some kinks - primarily the way in which you lay tiles, which is a pain in the arse in Hyrule Magic.

As for the ROM, make sure you get a clean version, and for compatibility's sake it should be the U ROM, so it'd be Zelda3 (U) [!] that you're looking for.  Obviously the 'Zelda3' part will be whatever the site you get it from has it listed as.  Some have it under Zelda, some under Legend, etc.

I've never messed with Hyrule Magic, but I'd imagine you'd edit the tiles/sprites in much the same way you would as with Super Metroid: with Tile Layer Pro or YY-Chr.

When you start getting your hands dirty, there's a chatroom room on irc.esper.net named #zelconst that has people knowledgeable about the Zelda hacking scene. I'd hang out there for awhile if I was you and do some research/information gathering.

Good luck on your future endeavors~
