Toying with the idea of starting a hack of Oracle of Ages for GBC on the side in my free time. It takes anywhere from 5-15 minutes per "screen" for me to finish a room. I'm not sure how I want to implement a replacement for Past/Present, though between Past/Present/Past Underwater/Present Underwater, there are 4 worlds. I'm not sure how much it can be expanded before something is overwritten, though I can say that the "underwater" worlds are the same size as the normal worlds, with a few extra underground/indoor rooms that were placed in the underwater worlds for lack of a better place for them. If I could use the game to its full capacity, the game could easily be about 40-50% bigger than the original game.
Link starts the game out in a weird world with a very large alien calling his name, when he wakes up and realizes it was a dream, he decides to forget about it (even though it is a recurring dream), though his mother convinces him he should ask the doctor about it. All seems to be fine until a portal unexpectedly opens and swallows up Link while he is visiting the town doctor about his dream. Link discovers that this alien planet is connected to his in a very big way, and that he must stop the evil alien ruling this planet before he destroys all of Hyrule in a power trip to expand his empire to Link's homeworld. Expect to see a normal looking overworld for Hyrule (as shown), and a crazy crystalized, funky alien world. Link will discover crazy alien items to help him on his way, explore crazy alien dungeons with occasional resprited crazy alien enemies, crazy alien everything. You'll also find out a few of the dungeons will also be in Hyrule, and that Link's primitive technology still has the power to beat up baddies anyway. After Link acquires all of the pieces to the weird alien gadget he was told to get by good Alien ruler, their engineers design a tool that will give Link access to the evil alien ruler's fortress, where the final showdown awaits.

I plan to do minor amounts of respriting, minor amounts of item asm hacking, major graphics changes, all new dungeons and expanded overworlds, bigger than the original. Towns will be very large in this game, and actually intimidating. The game will have an interesting plot progression and likable characters, with humor/drama/sad moments all included.
TIL there is an editor for the GBC LoZ's.
I like this idea - the Oracles are pretty much my favorite Zelda games.

Progress.

Link's house WIP. Warps took me a little while to figure out but I'm coming along.

Perhaps you could explain what you expect the game's storyline to be, location, and any themes you intend to explore and feature.

It seems to me if you are going to mod a game, you should have these things decided and planned out before you start to change the game itself.

If not you can end up with a disconnected world to explore, and you will end up going nowhere in terms of a progressive story.

Main post edited. That suit your need for info dawg?

Edit: Yes I've spotted all of the tiling errors in above screenshots, they are dated at this point.

Parabox

I hope you take a few cues from EarthBound for the alien world. Looking forward to seeing this develop.

ZOLE does have a handful of limitations I'm not used to that I need to work around. You cannot add warps (what transports link from one room to another that is not adjacent [going in/out doors]), and you cannot edit the tile properties in the tileset editor.

>mfw Link fell into a wall I drew and drowned

looking forward to this hack.
i've tried ZOLE myself, and it is very easy to screw something up in terms of scripted events and NPC's.

good luck on this, please post any progress that you make.
