Well, there's $1FF different palette blends ($00-$FF positive and negative), so I doubt anyone has gone through all of them. There's a doc floating around somewhere with a list of nice looking positive blends, but that's it.

Alright, I've been attempting to create some custom GFX for my hack. I'm horrible at it though, especially at making filler tiles. Anyway, this is my best attempt so far:

Seriously, in-game, those dirt tiles are incredibly ugly.

I hope I posted this in the right place...

EDIT: Damnit, the picture isn't working. Here's a link: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/21011283/WIP%20Tileset.PNG

EDIT2: Nevermind, fixed

Sorry, I never posted a pic before... Anyway, comments?

Quietus

It's hard to tell without seeing it in-game.  Post either a screenshot from the game, or a room picture from SMILE.

Unless my monitor died overnight, I'd say it's way too dark.  I can see the green edging, and the dots, but nothing else.

There's not supposed to be any background or anything, I just put a couple tiles together and opened quickmet.

I'll try again:

Scyzer

I'd lighten the dirt filler palette by 1 or 2 steps, just to make it more visible.

I should also point out to Quietus, playing full screen and playing within a window make a VERY large difference as to wether you can see GFX well. This may be completely fine in game if you play full screen.

Fe

Thank you. It does look better now. Alright, now I'm not so sure about the grass tiles:

It's just... I don't think they really fit in. They seem to not mesh correctly with the other tiles.

Scyzer

It seems because the grass extends down into the dirt. You've drawn the tiles in a way that it's as if you are looking diagonally down towards the grass, with the roots below the horizon, but SM is drawn as if it's a cross section of the world. You only see the indiviual layers.
Try drawing the grass so it only goes 1 or 2 pixels into the dirt at most, and it should mesh more with the surrounding tiles. I would also suggest drawing some larger dirt rock tiles to scatter around the dirt area, so it's not so plain.

These are very nice GFX though.

Thank you so much! I needed that. :^_^:

Anyway, thank you for all your help. Maybe now I'll come out of this with some decent GFX.

EDIT: Ok, I did all the simple tiles. Still need to make the trimmings, but here is a small area I made with the tiles I got so far:

I'm not sure I understand what this is aimed at.  I was commenting solely on the picture that he posted.  I know that things can look different in a number of ways when playing, but we comment on what we're given here, and that was my observation of the picture.

Scyzer

Cause you said it was too dark and couldn't see anything. If there's something else bright on your moniter while looking at dark pictures, they get harder to see. But anyways :P

@Xavier
Much better! :D You should have varying lengths of grass too, some being 2 tiles high and others being 1 or even half, like the regular grass, instead of looking like a corn field XD

Ok, thank you for the advice, I'll work on it some more today and edit it into this post when I get some more stuff done.

EDIT: Yay more pics

^-- Multi-layering now possible, added darker pallete for background tiles[/spoiler]

Was bored again, so I asked Project to name me two colors on irc. He said green and orange.

So I present this:

Use if ya want to, don't if ya don't. Comments welcome, for those that know how.

Quietus

Orange with Green is a bit heavy on the eyes, but the Green with Orange looks pretty snazzy, albeit a little dark.

ProjectXVIII

I think the only problem with the Orange with Green is the sky, it's a bit bright down by where it hits the mountains, the rest of it is pretty cool though. Green with Orange looks like something out of one of Grime's hacks, which makes it even cooler. :D

Parabox

Orange with green looks nice and warm, fit for a safe area.

Green with orange looks spooky, and is definitely recommendable to those who want to spook up the wrecked ship.

Quietus

Me item room did got dem layers.  Yarr! :^_^:

I'm a man who likes him some layers, but there isn't much in the way of depth. Something like shadows or layers that vary in brightness would result in layers that are more aesthetically pleasing and distinguishable. Also, the longer you look at the room, the more you wonder why the metal structure zig-zags.

Quietus

Hehe, not to panic.  It's not a room in my hack. :^_^:

I've just been experimenting with layering things up.  It seems to melt your brain at first, but as soon as you start grasping the tiles that need to go into layer two to fill transparencies and what have you in the first layer, it's not nearly as tough.

Fe

Alright, I know how much my tileset sucked, so I trashed the grass tiles, got a new pallete, and turned it into a cold area tileset. You know, with ice and frozen stuff. Looks ok I guess, here's a pic:
