I do really hope that Black magic picks up. I messed around with Hyrule magic abit, and its a clusterf*ck of weirdness. Also, anyone know why almost every ALTTP hacking forum in existence is dead or almost dead?

Quietus

My guess would be that it's the amount of work involved.  Hacking, even at the best of times, takes a long time, and a lot of dedication.  To create a hack of an RPG or adventure game is that much more of a mammoth task.  I guess most people find themselves overwhelmed when they start, and soon lose heart of ever creating what they envision.

I think you answered your own question there.

Hyrule Magic sucks, so people get discouraged and quit making hacks. If Black Magic were to ever get finished, I'm sure we'd see an explosion in ZIII hacking.

Yeah. But by the time its finished, wind waker hacking will be here.  :eyeroll: (not really, it's just that its taking a while. I know how long it takes to make good programs though.)

something makes me think wind waker hacking wouldn't go very far. although i guess there have been people to hack newer games.

Helloooo???? IS ANYONE THERE?!?! The last activity was about half a year ago, and I need some help with my rom. I would REALLY like something to allow me to import rooms from other roms. I corrupted the final boss room of my rom, and I can't beat the game. I would REALLY like someone to be active on this site for at least once every [insert time span that's shorter than half a year here]. I haven't checked this site in a long time personally, but seriously? At least talk about your personal life or something! Having absolutely NO activity from EVERYBODY is a huge downer...

I understand that no one is active because Hyrule magic is a douche, but... just.... gaa...

You know what? Maybe I'll just show some things from my rom hack to pass the time... because the Zelda 3 rom hacking community is on a real hibernation right now, and it's bugging me.

... FEW... I got that out of my system...

Soo......... MathOnNapkins, how's the progress on Black Magic? Or have you been busy with life? I don't blame you for not updating in a long time, but I'm just being impatient right now...

Scyzer

I'm so sorry. I didn't realise we existed purely to attend to your every need.

How about instead of whining that no one is around, you could actually post and ask a question and wait for an answer. This place is not empty, you just haven't bothered joining in.

Anyway, the general rule with any kind of ROM hacking is backups. If something goes wrong, look at a backup and find where it went wrong to fix it. You should never just expect people to help you if you won't try to help yourself first.

AFAIK, Math isn't working on Black Magic, or his hack, much at all anymore.

I screwed up the rom when I was first starting to use Hyrule Magic, and before I knew to use backups and that editing the final boss room was a BAD idea. I didn't actually find out I corrupted it until recently. Also, a lot of what I say comes out wrong. I'm not some demanding asshole, I'm just not very good at conveying what I mean sometimes while not giving the wrong idea. I actually normally have to re-read everything that I write so I get the tone right, and even then I can't see if I wrote it badly until I wait a while and then read it. It's really a problem. I do apologize for being so rude. I just can't seem to write out my thoughts while not indicating something incorrect. Also, responding with a sarcastic comment is not the proper way to deal with a rude person because that just pisses the person off (which doesn't solve anything).

Unfortunately, your answer is kind of in your question.  The Zelda hacking community is very quiet at the best of times, and Hyrule Magic is not very easy to use.  Together, it just means that nobody is really picking it up.  I'd love to have a go at it (just like my Super Metroid hacks - ), but my first tinkerings with HM were not exactly inspiring.

All this talk of Hyrule Magic here, just shows the need for Black Magic!

I really do hope that Black Magic lives up to the promise, and that it's release will breathe new life into the ALttP Modding community.

Quietus

And then hope that all of the hacks that appear aren't insane, hard-type hacks. :^_^:

In this case, I think something would be better than nothing Quietus.

I'm posting here because I was checking up on the updates that mon's has had on his new black magic editor. Now that I'm here I see that no updates have happened in a while. This is sad news as many people are counting on this editor to happen.

I hope I don't get anybody's hopes up when they see a new post in here, but I wanted to comment on specifically this.  I've attempted before to make a Zelda hack with Hyrule Magic.  I merely wanted to make a Master Quest-style hack (I know, I know), but even that was kind-of outside of the realm of Hyrule Magic.  All I was trying to do was reorganize the layouts of dungeon interiors, not even adding enemies or item drops to any of the rooms, and I still ran into space limitations incredibly fast.  It was certainly a deterrent.  Zelda 3 is so very limited without being expanded that unless an editor comes along that automatically deals with making an expanded game editable, like Black Magic was aiming to do, then we're just never going to see A Link to the Past become popular in the hacking community.

Hyrule Magic is pretty easy to use, as long as you know which digits represent which dungeon/indoor area.
So, here:
Eastern Palace=08
Desert Palace=09,0A,0B,0C
Tower of Hera=33
Palace of Darkness=26
Swamp Palace=25

Thieves Town=34
Ice Palace=2D
