Ideas for Metroid (M1) music – Any suggestions?

I'm looking for suggestions for M1 music.  I'm working on the music for my M1 hack, I've translated a few songs into M1 but I think I would prefer a more sci-fi sounding set of music tracks.

Here's the criteria:

Can be any type of instrumental as long as it has tablature.

Guitar tablature is preferred.

Can't be heavy on chord use.

Of course any suggestion would help.

Here's where I get most of my guitar tablature from:

http://www.songsterr.com/

So far I have converted over: (portions of)

Nine Inch Nails - Hurt
Nine Inch Nails - The Wretched
Nine Inch Nails - The Frail  - (Title screen - Final)
Mason Williams - Classical Gas first 1/4
Metallica - Orion
Metallica - Call of Ktulu  - (Kraid - Final)
Metallica - Fade to black
And made a few basic tunes on my own

They all sound pretty cool in game but don't necessarily fit as well as I would have liked.  The NIN songs are too repetitive and rely on the sound effects (the originals) so they don't work so well.

So that's where I'm at, I need some outside suggestions.

Ok we can scratch the criteria (might be too complicated, no one's biting), how about anything sci-fi, Star Trek, Star wars, whatever.  Any sci-fi theme music that comes to mind.  :?:  :bounce:

My suggestion would be look at the Soundtracks for different Anime, they tend to have  a lot of really good instrumental type music you might find fitting, and going off MST's post there's also a bunch of other games who's OSTs you could convert as well

Maybe something like this? Also, if there's something you're interested in without tablature available, I could give you a hand with it.

It'd also cool to hear the M1-ified tracks even if you're not going to use them.

Wow, thanks for posting this.  This guy is amazing.  Listening to his music makes me realize what I need to do to bring my M1 tracks to the next level.  I have single track with bass down pretty good and just recently started to experiment with two note "chords" and plan on experimenting with 3 note chords using the bass as the lowest note in the chord.  This guy has done so masterfully!  This is really where I need to direct my efforts.

Snarf, I'm not too experienced with recording and posting you tube videos yet, once I figure it out I'd like to post some stuff.  I'm going to post some tracks at some point, I posted my fade to black track (work in progress) but I think it's a little buggy, needs work, the echo seems off if  pasted into a clean rom, there might be a few steps to make it sound right.  EDIT: I just tested it, it sounds ok, I thought it was going to have issues since I used the same shared memory trick on another track and it gave me trouble.  Anyway if you listen to it you'll see what I mean about being single tracked mainly.  It sounds ok, I'm going to try and push it further though.

Here's one I'm working on right now, I'm finding it difficult to translate the guitar sound but I have the notes an timing spot on:

Yngwie Malmsteen    - Black Star (amazing guitar instrumental)

Press the PLAY button (I started at 15 where the bass kicks in)

I also started on Megadeth countdown to extinction...

I just found this digging around the internet:

http://www.nesgametabs.com/guitar-tabs/

(Maybe I should have created this post in the M1 section, moderators feel free to relocated it if you'd like)

It has Mrrichard999s BLASTER MASTER music!  For his "Metroid Blast" hack.  I'll have to convert that over for him, maybe that'll give him a "blast" of motivation to continue working on his hack!

EDIT:

Found another NES music tab site:

The list continues.....

Here's a key I created to help in converting guitar tab for M1.  I planned on posting it when I created a tutorial.  When I have the time to create the tutorial I'll also include some tips on timing.  In the mean time someone might find it useful.

There's a particular section of the song "Cassandra Gemini" by The Mars Volta that would fit really well in my opinion.
Of course the song is 32 odd minutes long so when I have the chance I'll write up a tab of the segment (I believe it's part of the movement "Tarantism" if you're interested in looking it up). Do you have Guitar Pro? If so that's make it simple to send you the file.

On a semi related note I get all of my tabs from Ultimate Guitar.

I generally use Songsterr since its free to access and play the tabs.  Also you can mute individual tracks to focus on one instrument such as the bass or guitar.

If there's something you're interested in without tablature available, I could give you a hand with it.

So far I haven't tried to convert anything over that doesn't have any tab.  I tinkered around with my own basic creations but once I started using tablature it's so much faster, and fairly easy also.  If you aren't familiar with guitar tablature its super easy, especially when compared to piano or other instruments.  it literally shows you which string and which fret to play.  To convert to your Metroid Tuner app you would just see where the note is, look at the key I posted in my previous post (printed would be better) and it shows which note and octave to type in.  Once you have the timing figured out the tablature even shows that.  You could literally convert over a whole track with timing in less than an hour.  I'm finding that there is more to it though to make them work in M1 and as game music.  You have to pick pieces of the song, make some minor changes and go from there.  High octaves like 5 and 6 sound kind of crappy in the M1 sound engine, I've dropped the octave on a few that I've been working on to make them sound better.

So far this one is my favorite insert into M1, it sounds amazing in Kraid:
