I gotta bring this up:
I just encounter a few bugs in the game that make the game freeze. When charging the music stops and when you try and leave out of a door that game freezes. Anybody else have this problem?

begrimed

Sounds like you used an unheadered patch on a headered ROM, or an otherwise incompatible SM ROM.

All of Aileron's complaints have been fixed, and so so many more graphical improvements have been made over the last few weeks. 0.7 is well on its way (no release date because I never never never ever ever ever make deadlines, as Rise will attest).

Most of PB's palettes have been reworked and made more vibrant. I got a new monitor that has made me see the error of my ways, and it validated a lot of peoples' complaints about the color choices. Lots of subtle GFX edits that get rid of sharp corners and cut-off lines, mostly for backgrounds. Nearly all enemy graphics have been edited to make use of unused colors in their palette (most enemies have around 3-5 colors that aren't used in their sprite at all).

Wrecked Ship has been opened up, allowing you to collect all of its items except for gravity suit before fighting Phantoon. The Wrecked Ship's robots can also be killed with 3 super missiles now, for speed runners who might be willing to sacrifice the ammo to save time. The turtle family in Maridia can also be killed with super missiles now, because fuck them.

The unfinished shortcut in Maridia that links the large pre-plasma room with the other large room west of it has been finished (pictured below). The shortcut requires Draygon to be killed before it's accessible.

Quietus

Loving the colours, as usual.  You always seem to have a great grasp when working with them.

If it's not too much work, I'd like to place a request for a patch (when released) with no changes to physics / movement, etc, so it's a beautiful, repaletted version of the original game.  If you did, then it's just possible that I may never touch the original game again. :yay:

begrimed

Yeah, that's been on the agenda since near the beginning. Also a version with no palette or background changes at all; just the physics and enemy behavior. I'm not gonna worry about those until PB is as finished and polished as it can possibly get, though.

Quietus

No problem.  Just as long as it's happening.  Otherwise it could be a
Grime against humanity.
Just for that I am never making it. In fact, I am going to make future versions of PB check for you and disable itself so you can never play past version 0.6. Now get out.

Mon732

Loving the palettes Grime, can't wait for 0.7 to come out.

Where's the wailing-like-a-baby emote when you need it? :^_^:

passarbye

loving the progress as always grime.
keep up the amazing work!

begrimed

Maridia no longer looks like an oily waste site.

Quietus

Haha, I love the spikey dudes' colours.

FPzero

You did it Grime!  You inverted the sand!

begrimed

Sure enough! I didn't even need to use color replace. I just changed the palette and made a few quick GFX edits, lol.

FPzero

Even better.  Color replace is really handy when you want to shift a lot of colors at once like I'm doing this morning.  I'm actually importing the sand into another set right now but I need to shift which colors it uses in a row so I can make use of yet-unused palette colors.

Springball can now be collected much earlier if you're so inclined. The crumbly grapple block has been replaced with a normal shot block, and the wall of power bomb blocks in Shaktool's room has been taken out. I also reworked the Shaktool seqence so it's not such a long and boring process anymore. He still breaks through blocks, but now you can run ahead of him if you're quick about it. And because I wanted to, his room layout is a bit roughed up when you return to it after getting springball, and his position has also changed. He partied hard while you were away getting your springball on.

(Haven't fixed up this palette yet)

Quietus

That's pretty cool, actually.  It was always kind of fun that Shaktool was there, but his sequence was always so stupidly long.

I take it you still can't get Springball without Gravity?  If you can, then it'd be another 1% on the NBMB run. :^_^:

begrimed

Actually you can, forgot to mention that last post. I fixed quicksand so it's not a permastuck without gravity suit anymore. That + walljumps and bomb jumps underwater open up pre-gravity Maridia a lot. Quicksand in general is a lot less obnoxious now.

Weterr123
Cor Grimey!
This is getting so good...

Can I play past 0.6?

Quietus

Those underwater modifications should also mean that those tempted by a suitless run can do so without pulling any hair out. :^_^:

Speedrunners are going to have a lot more options now, because Maridia's 3 super missile gates have been taken out. Actually, all of the 1-way gates are gone now. Since the response to similar changes I've already made have positive been so far, I don't think the blowback of deviating from the exact Super Metroid layout is going to be as upsetting to people as I initially thought. I'm also open to other ideas any of you guys might have that I probably haven't considered.

Quietus

You could consider altering the crumble blocks to shot blocks in lengthy one way loops.  Thinking of the gauntlet and GT's room.

can't wait to play this v0.7 !

Quietus

Please don't do that.  The occasional .gif can be amusing in context, but something that's murdering people's eyes, and is five times bigger than it needs to be, is just irritating.

Weterr123

Hmmmm...

Thinking about all these changes, and I come to the conclusion that removing gates and such opens so many possibilities! That being said, I really want to play and test different routes, but with normal physics as Sir Quietus mentioned.

Interestingly, last time I played PB, I enjoyed not being able to mockball the first room on the right hand side of green jungly Brinstar (you know, for early supers), and viewed that as a positive. However, I didn't like that I could jump across for wave, just felt toooo 'springy', like an olympic long jumper haha! So, yes, although the physics are quite groovy, I'd love to tackle PB with it's open possibilities, but with classic physics.
